Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program supports community efforts to address the crime of sexual assault by establishing a process for accurate evidence collection and support for sexual assault survivors. Our primary function is to provide objective forensic evaluation of child, adolescent and adult victims of sexual assault. SANE’s work closely with other members of the community sexual assault response system (e.g., advocates from sexual assault crisis centers, law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, other court personnel, victim/witness specialists based in justice system offices, and child protective services workers) to meet the multiple needs of victims.

The SANE program is available 24 hours a day and provides an environment that is patient focused.
Care provided can include, as appropriate:

  • SANE examination
  • Referrals
  • Emergency contraception
  • STI prophylactic treatment
  • Expert witness
  • Educational presentations

The SANE program provides referrals to the following agencies as appropriate:

  • Crisis Lines
  • Sexual Assault Agencies
  • Shelters
  • Police
  • Child Protective Services
  • Counseling
